    invest in Irish football/socer

With the win today in Scotland Ruby in on high
but how much is football been neglected here in Ireland
Investment in low and supporters even more so

Its often said that irish is a sporting nation but football plays 3rd fiddle to GAA and Rugby
But yet we have a country and a population that football mad they only problem is they watch a foreign league

OK will never be able to compete with the English premier league but isnt it time we invest more in football here at home and try and keep our better players

You're right. We are football mad. Football being the game where you have 15 men aside kicking an O'Neill's football around.

As for soccer, I like the League of Ireland and it is a pity that more people do not attend. It is ridiculous to be paying large sums of money to go see a team in Scotland or England when the same sum of money would buy you a season ticket for your local League of Ireland club. But that is the way things are.

You cannot expect financial investment if there is not going to be any return.

There is def a market here to sustain 1 team in the champions league, and someday it will happen. Would be great to keep some of our best players here. Its going to take time though.

First step is getting a team to the group stages. The new Lansdown stadium could be a starting point.

I have to commend the Shamrock Rovers supporters for the most efficient way they have managed the affairs of the club since taking it over. And it is really refreshing to see the actual supporters of a football club owning it instead of it being an investment by some businessman. I hope this proves to be the trend for the future ... the results for rovers to date have been pretty positive.

Anyway, if you are interested in investing in Irish football Rovers is an option for you, You could be the owner of a football club for 50 or 60 euros a month!
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!

There is a very good book about why football died as a local spectator sport

good post, i myself support a league of ireland team.

but the problem is, how are you going to keep our better players when the irish league "wil never be able to compete with the english premier league"?

there is a dearth of work to be done with the league such as continuing to support clubs pass the UEFA licence requirements, new stadiums and more importantly actually ensuring the current clubs actually survive, look what happened to cobh ramblers, shelbourne (kinda not sorry about that lol) whats happening with cork city etc

it does not always help when there is also a "preceived bias" towards dublin

There were gates of 30,000 weekly at Milltown in the Seventies.
It can be done again with sensible financial management and proper promotion, including lobbying of RTE and the other media to bill Irish football above British and continental football on bulletins.

good point JC about RTE but also about the media here in general. Even those free papers don't bother to preview our league on a Friday preferring to devote 2 full pages to the EPL instead. I think another good European run like Pats and Drogs last year is the key to get interest here. Look at Shels vs Deportivo a few years back. It will take the same sort of luck the national side got in 1987 when Scotland beat Bulgaria but it can be done.

For now, the summer is here, the foreign leagues are over, there's no Euros or WC to watch so the only option for soccer is the LEague of Ireland.

One would have thought that there was quite enough money in football that government investment wasn't needed. Also I'm not sure why the focus on three sports, there are hundreds of them.
