    The coming TV revolution

OK, it is not so much coming as pretty much here. Flat Panel technology whether plasma or LCD or other is becoming more and more commonplace but there is a problem with the design of most new Irish homes. They are all premised around the idea of a box in the corner. Where does the big flat panel go in the living room? Picture the standard modern Irish living room, door from hallway into room with window, and opposite the window are the double rooms in the kitchen and the final wall has the fireplace. So, where does the tv go?

Over the fireplace? Too High. Across the window, the double doors? Hardly, across the hallwall? then the seating is on either side of the fireplace and in most places a couch won't fit in there. Answers?
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.

Yes, a stand and then you have a triangle of wasted space directly behind.

Its a harsh new world we find ourselves in! Darfur has the janja weed militia, Iraq has the insurgents & stupid foreign armies, china has a brutal government, france has racial tensions, new orleans is ************************ed - we have no clear place to put d'telly!

    Smart arse rant over.

Anyway, this is a problem as the things are too light to fit on the old tv stand and I cant really see where else to put it?

Another thing that isnt mentioned is the fact that a lot of us idiots who bought LCD tellys in the last while didnt factor in HDTV which isnt supported on a lot of older LCD and plasma tvs. So now I'll have to buy a new one.....Its tough being a white westerner at times, it really is....why people from afghanistan wouldnt want to take up this gauntlet is beyond me?
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

also guys, the buzz iz that people should right now buy just very good normal TV's, they are far better quality for the same price.

flat Panel and LCD are not up to spec yet, unless you willing to pay top lolly

I don't know about that. LCDs use up about 10% of the power of CRT tellies, so you save on electricity. Also, no radiation emitted from LCDs as opposed to the blasts you get from the giant electron gun inside CRTs.

I find LCD pictures to be a lot clearer and with better colour. The colours seem much warmer.

your right that saturation is a lot stronger, but i think a good CRT would do the same

i didnt know about the eletricity saving.

can you watch objects moving fast on LCD, ie football without the tearing of the screen?

Yeah, as far as I can tell. I have an LCD monitor here and I play a lot of very fast-moving games. It's only 17" but it hasn't presented any problems at all. Picture is crystal clear and the monitor is just as fast as a CRT. I can only imagine it's the same for an LCD telly since they use the same technology.

Having said that, I have seen a few LCDs that leave a long trail behind a moving screen, I don't know if that's the same with some TVs. Doesn't happen with me though.

Anyone give a 'non-tekkie' explanation of the advantage of paying 'twice-as-much' for HD? Is this just another gimmick to enthuse the early adapters to spend money?
