    A Question

I have read a bit into Lisbon 2, and the vote on it in October.

One of the big changes it will do, if I am correct, is re-allocate EU representation by population.

Assuming for a moment, that Lisbon 2 does pass...

Wouldn't it make a LOT of sense to enlarge Ireland's citizenship base through citizenship by descent, so as to minimize the loss of clout within the EU? (A serious Loss of clout would seriously affect the amount of EU funding for Irish programs & economic development)

I think even skeptics of citizenship for the diaspora should re-examine their reasons.

I, for one, see no harm to Ireland, and only advantages to be gained by reforming the current law.

If I am mistaken about Lisbon 2, then feel free to correct me.

    I agree...........

I'll be brief in that I find Lisbon concerning, because we need correct this country and the only people whom know what is best for ourselves is the sane-minded irish people.

Like the current Jus-Sanguinis Law is insane for disqualifying the vast majority of our diaspora whom can actually help this country, when times are tough we look after our own.

    Fair enough.

I just find the issue intriguing is all.
I was in Ireland during the vote in June of 2008.

    Don't let this thread die!

I am doing (unpaid) legal work on behalf of a Manhattan law firm suing the State of Rhode Island....so I may not be as active posting many replies daily. But this is still a VERY important issue.

I think the benefits of enlarging Ireland's citizenship base far outweighs any trivial costs.

In truth, I see no real detriment to Ireland by embracing the diaspora as citizens.
The arguments AGAINST this reform policy seem to be more content in claiming proponents are racist or fascist than they are in attacking the MERIT of reforming the current law.

Recently a friend emailed me a latter they were presumably sending out, I am glad such action is being taken. And if you haven't taken similar action yet, please do.

    Hi, JR.

I understand your concern......... I don't think this thread is in too much trouble.

I was going to suggest if you encourage your friends to join, then we can get a fresh perspective on this matter.

I remember from the Diaspora.ie Starship section your brother posted: How about get him and other Irish Americans on board too?

You'll find plenty in your Office I'm sure in Manhattan............ lol

Bars too! Ancient Order of Hibernians etc

The more people whom hear about this the better........ David Mcwilliams originally suggested this idea but he now has a great platform to promote it further.

    I'd contact his publicist

Yes my brother would be a wise choice, I mentioned it to him, he is a bit lazy with online forums though.
But has been keeping tabs through me on this subject.

A little arm twisting might help. lol

Unfortunately, I am not in manhattan working on this project, but am working for the firm based there in Rhode Island. If I had access to more people that would be wonderful, but most of my contacts/friends unfortunately have little Irish heritage.

There are a few local pubs/bars and such that cater to Irish crowds, maybe I can design some sort of a informational newsletter and get it posted. We will have to see what can be done with that, and what others are willing to do for it.

Either way, whatever I can do, rest assured, I will do.

Also what do you all of think of programs (similiar to the Ulster Project) designed to improve diapsora relations and break down stereotypes on both sides of the 'pond'? (There's a bit too many people who smear the diaspora as plastic paddies and then glorify James Connolly without noticing the irony.)

    I agree with that Idea.

It will show the ignorant selfish gombeen hypocrite mentality, has no place in this country and they are loyal only to themselves and not Ireland. Some of them would have relatives in America but are too ashamed to admit the truth because it hurts their small and empty little ego.

I know plenty of people of Predominent Irish Descent whom would benefit this country, some are sadly beyond the generation of eligibility.

One reason to support this which isn't on the list of high priorities; is the huge supply of good-looking diaspora women.
