Can anyone tell me in what state is the AOH in Ireland at the moment?

I know the organisation is alive and well in the US, but what kind of membership and activity does it have in Ireland.

I would be especially interested to know did the organisation survive in the South at all?

That's actually an interesting question. I've only ever heard of the AOH in the context of the North or the USA. I've never come across them in Dublin or ever heard them discussed here. Who are they? What are they?

I've noticed a few times now that Padraig has directed regular posters inquiries on different matters to the Politics.IE Wiki. Do they not know it exists or does it need a more prominent link on the forum page?

But that article says next to nothing about the AOH in Ireland,which was what i was asking about.

I've added a bit to that article re:Irish politics here. The AOH became an almost exclusively Fine Gael club throughout the 1930s and subsequently. It only really survived in north Leinster and in border counties. In the North the SDLP are prominent in its membership. Last prominent FG TD to be a member was, as far as I know, Brendan McGahon. James Coburn was also a senior member until his death, also a Louth FG TD.

That piece isn't perfect through so if anyone wants to add bits to it feel free. I have no idea about membership rates and such.

The Dundalk Hibs barred my grandmother ( tee totaller , daily communicant) from ever setting foot in their premises for 50 years . The crime which earned her this 50 year ban was marrying an IRA man ( she was from a staunch hib family) . Interestingly her ban came the week after her husband died and not before it , because hed have either shot them or burned the hall for insulting his wife and they knew it . However when he succombed to TB in the late 40s they had their last laugh and barred the lady for 50 years . In 1998 the ban was lifted , the 50 years being up ,and she returned to socialise with her firends once again . Although being nearly blind and hardly able to walk by that stage she might have missed out on a lot .

Shower of feckin no good hib , blueshirt , free state SDLP , gerry fitt type scumbags . Thats my opinion of the feckin hibs .

The AOH's St. Patrick's Day Parade was up in North Antrim last week, and they're not very strong in numbers, only about 12 or 13 branches of them were out, most of them based in rural Co. Antrim, Derry, Donegal and Tyrone. From what I've heard they've quit doing speeches at their parades and I've never known them to make any political statements in the press.
