What if Paganism was never defeated

As are all celebrating the expulsion of Paganism from our culture today, I was wondering what Ireland (or other Countries) would be like if we had maintained a predominately Pagan society.

Given its ecological background, and how important ecology is to most of us in modern times, might it have been a positive for our society? I have a feeling I may not have lived through the purge.

Well, personally, I am a big fan of Europe's christian heritage, as expressed in our laws, culture, architecture and philosophical tradition, and am especially proud of Ireland's role in its preservation during the Dark Ages.
If you miss paganism so much, why not smear your bollocks with woad and go live in a tree?

Definitely. I'd be a big proponent of bringing back ducking for all new age victims.

The "arrival" of Christanity didn't see the explusion of paraganism from society on this island, rather it saw an intermingling of the pre-existing religious and societal order with the superfical aspects of Christianity. Society probably continued at the vast majority of levels as it always had done with the changes being on a largely superfical level, the principal and most radical changes were in how the elite levels of society sought to justify their actions. And even at that level, those changes generally took place long after Christanity "arrived".

When one sees a "big bang" change in Irish society in the arrival of christanity, one is most likely guilty of a selection bias problem, as their main (exclusive?) sources are those written by those who sought to emphasis the change in society.

Paganism was never defeated, merely incoporated most likely on a pyramid like basis, with the most incorporation taking place on the mass public scale, and filtering out as one looks through the more elite levels of society.
