Question: Why has one political party hi-jacked our national anthem in order to have their own name included right at the start.
Seo dhibh a cháirde duan Óglaigh / Amhrán na bhFiann / The Soldier's Song
I quote:
“Amhran na bFhiann...."Sinne laochra fail"\"we are heroes of destiny". This is the wording of the original version by the author, Laochra was changed to Fianna...giving Fianna Fail meaning Soldiers of destiny, by the Fianna Fail political party when they came to government early in the birth of the Irish state. - David Menzies.”
People often ask how has Fianna Fail managed to become so inculcated into the very psyche of Irish life. Well this is just one of the reasons why. I have attended many big matches where you wait for your team to battle for the prize. It is a highly emotional moment for many people. For example being in Croke Park on all-Ireland final day, waiting tensely for the game to start or at a soccer or rugby international. And then Amhran na BhFiann is sang and Fianna Fail instantly becomes associated with everything that is good about Irish life. It has been implanted into our minds at an emotional moment that Ireland and Fianna Fail are inseparable. Is this kind of thing allowed any where else, except in totalitarian regimes? It sends out a very deep signal that in order to be patriotic you have to support FF. There are many other instances of FF manipulation I could cite, such as the blatant bias in our history books many years ago when I was attending national school, or RTE’s “decision” to play funeral music all day on radio and television when Dev died in 1975.
I, for one, think that in the interest of fairness our anthem should be changed.
The FF propaganda machine has been in full swing for the best part of a century. Should they be allowed get away with this?
