A society that allows Martin Cullen remain Minister for the Arts has no future.

    Come to think of it,

A society that allows Martin Cullen has no future.

He's most certainly not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to understanding the
need for a comprehensive and intelligent Arts Policy, however I certainly blame
O Donoghue whose risible Arts Act 2003 increased Governmental Interference in the
Arts, thus allowing thickos like the Minister for Justice stick is knobbly oar into things

But thats what happens when arrogant and idiotic governments attempt to get full
spectrum dominance and do not confine themselves to actual governance.

These idiots are perpetuating the illusion that Ahern is a writer ffs :

If they were involved in actual governance, you could forgive the occasional overreach. But the overwhelming body of evidence would suggest that governance is a concept with which they are totally unfamiliar.

Please amend the title to Writers' Centres.

The writers would surely insist on the distinction between the possessive singular (apostrophe before the 's) and the possessive plural (apostrophe after the 's').

I think that depends on what you regard as the role of the funding. If it's just to put on performances, you may have a point, but if it's to give opportunities to performers, then you definitely need some form of regional distribution. As well as putting on productions in Cork and Limerick, Opera 2005 provided the only opportunity for young performers to get involved in those two cities.

They only had a 110K grant last year, but still put on well-regarded (nominated for an Irish Times award) productions. Not a bad return on investment.

So it turns out the opera policy that was put in place back then was a complete mess.

The country has lost two of its three opera companies between government funding cuts to one and meddling with the other and now the new super-duper one has collapsed
