I would disagree that it should be classed as low prority. If this country is ever to get it's s*it together it will have to do do based on the innovation of it's population. It equipped me with a way of thinking about things and more importantly how to think about things.

There are some massive problems with the way Arts funding was cut.

There was a 3% cut in the Opera budget and this was achieved by cutting all funding from Opera 2005.

If all organisations had faced a 3% cut, all would have continued, but as things stand Opera 2005 will be winding down for this year and possibly forever.

In effect, what has been cut off is the only company that was providing opportunities for both performers and audiences in Munster.

Dunno. Are their backers involved in huge entertainment centres where Disney and High School Musical is churned to kiddies ?

I think the general point is that if you scale back everyone's grants almost all organisations can adapt. But by cutting funding completely from some organisations, while others maintain their full grant, those organisations that lose their whole grant are effectively shut down.

Even Cullen he of the wasted e voting machines is on song today.

Let the patrons, the fat cats of the Celtic tiger support the arts, not the State, not now anyway, there are too many, too soon, struggling to eek out an existence, who will need more State and community help.

The Arts, often thrive in a bad times, think of the Commitments in recession bleak Dublin of the 80s.

The soul escapes from harsh reality, from despair, and achieves great things.

I mean low priority in terms of funding front line medical and educational services etc. You know what I mean. I value the arts.

In relation to the cut to the Cork opera festival, or whatever it was called, I would have to say that all opera funding should be put into one centralised company and season. The media is so cost intensive all we have presently is small amounts scattered giving poor quality productions.

I was frequently at the Anna Livia productions until I could take no more of their terrible production values, awful orchestras and musicianship and third rate performances. I well remember a Faust that was particularly execrable. I am sorry to say that unless Opera funding is cut to everyone other than ONE festival\production, we will never have sustainable opera in this country as no-one will want to come back.
