President unveils Memorial To Irish Soldiers

A ceremony at the site of the new monument in Dublin's Merrion Square was attended by the President, the Taoiseach and the Defence Minister. Relatives of deceased members of the Irish forces were present.

Dublin-born artist Brian King won an international competition to create the monument, which was bugeted to cost €175,000 euro to design, construct and install but cost €250k.

This monument is a memorial to all soldiers who fought for Ireland throughout our history. We owe them so much.

    sorry

Sorry, but I decline the increasing public reflex to military worship.

    Memorial: An Extravagant Waste

A very nice memorial has been placed (or should I say launched) in Merrion Park today. Consisting of four bronze caste, full size soldier statues, a permanent "eternal" gas lit flame, Granite cladding and glass.

It must have cost a bomb.

And quite extravagant I believe given the economic circumstances, where even life saving vaccines are being cut for a mere 14 million savings.

It seems a waste, and well above the necessary.

Does anyone have costs of this construction?

    And whats your opinion.

The monument is for members of the Defence Forces who have died in service.

Comparing them with that list of criminals and paramilitaries is distasteful.

Those were Irish Soldiers. Not any of those you listed Parnella.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

We will sqaunder almost €900 million abroad this year (and the same again next year) on that 'Irish Aid' thing so what's the problem?

Nice to see that the lives of young Irish girls can be put at risk instead!

The problem is that the long term costs of this will be quite hight - Gas costs (did you see the size of the flame ), maintainence costs.

Let alone the money that must have been spent constructing it.

A bit of rock with an engraving in it would have done.
