In the metro this morning (page2) there was a small piece about how black/non-irish job seekers face 3 times more discrimination when looking for a job than their Irish (read white) counter-parts. How do they know this? Were employers asked? Even if they were asked, who's going to say "yeah he had all the right qualifications, but he was black for goodness sake!!"
While I have no doubt that racism is a problem in finding a job for some people at some point, how likely is it that the people who took part in this study were asked: "Have you ever experienced racism in looking for a job?" A good chunk of people asked would happily play the racist card no doubt, whether it was actually justified or not. For example, I work with many different nationalities, one particularly lazy Slovenian would get in trouble for not showing up or just doing nothing and it was always becuase our managers a racist........apparently, why would a racist have employed someone non-irish? just playing the race card I guess.
