Black job seekers face 3 times more discrimination

In the metro this morning (page2) there was a small piece about how black/non-irish job seekers face 3 times more discrimination when looking for a job than their Irish (read white) counter-parts. How do they know this? Were employers asked? Even if they were asked, who's going to say "yeah he had all the right qualifications, but he was black for goodness sake!!"
While I have no doubt that racism is a problem in finding a job for some people at some point, how likely is it that the people who took part in this study were asked: "Have you ever experienced racism in looking for a job?" A good chunk of people asked would happily play the racist card no doubt, whether it was actually justified or not. For example, I work with many different nationalities, one particularly lazy Slovenian would get in trouble for not showing up or just doing nothing and it was always becuase our managers a racist........apparently, why would a racist have employed someone non-irish? just playing the race card I guess.

There is no doubt that there is some discrimation but the poll is a record of people's perceptions not of actual discrimination.
You would have to look at the positions they were going for, their skillset, command of language, who got the job etc. before you could say yes they were discriminated.
I used work in recruitment and I can assure that every single person who doesn't get the job feels discriminated.
The poll is a nonsense and does not measure any real discrimination. Thats not to say there is no discriminatin but this adds nothing to the debate.

If there is so much talk of discrimination, and so many immigrant support groups, any employer is going to wonder how difficult it would be to fire an african for incompetence without ending up in court & looking at a compensation payout.

In any case, do they actually have the requisite education for the positions sought ?

Check out the Nigerian who pops up on this forum - claims to be a legal eagle, knows some legal jargon, just not what it means, or how to construct a legible sentence out of it.

Would you be happy if he represented you in court ?

Whilst I have no doubt that there is a problem with racism for black job seekers, I have also noted that the fear of being called a racist has also increased peoples reluctance to hire black people, in a strange way, the abhorrence that so many feel for racial discrimination may actually be working against black people. Odd, but anecdotally, seems to have happened a couple of times.

As for the survey, perhaps a read here might make for some interesting reading when it comes to the outright ridiculous claims made in the media about any number of things.

I always laugh when i see reports about the gardai not responding to someone's aid because the person was foreign. Thats just the gardai for you. They dont care about color or ethnicity if it was Fionn McCool getting a hamemring or abused he wouldn't get any help either.

I, in instance of myriadocrity, have elevated to position (high court) that has only ever been allowed to that which is acceptable for dalliance with much credible carnivorous appetite!

What is distressing is the lack of constance in the ambulatory fields we find ourselve immersed so steadily and happily!
