Night time carvery to save small pubs

The day time pub carvery menu is one of the few bargains in Irish eateries, aside from dubious fast food. With small pubs closing down every week, surely many of them on busy national roads could add substantially to their business by introducing a night time carvery? Not many people want to eat a big carvery dinner in the middle of the day, except maybe German tourists who rise at dawn and manual labourers.Night time dinner is now customary but it costs a fortune in conventional restaurants.

Its about costs, food is very labour intensive and they would have to make sure they would get the footflow.
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

It is quite a good idea , and would likely take off in areas populated mostly by single people. The Licensing Laws prohibit children in pubs after a certain time (6.30 pm ?)

10pm in the summer months. 9pm off season. You would have to get a steady flow of business to break even on this one.

pubs will survive if drink is available at a reasonable rate. stop the rip-off!

the smoking ban has also had an enormous effect

I don't buy the smoking ban excuse. I don't know a single person who won't go to the pub because they can't smoke inside.
I know plenty who would hate if the ban was revoked and would spend less time in pubs as a result.

Off licenses are killing the pub trade. I much prefer stocking up on a few bottles of vino and a few tinnies, cooking some food, and inviting friends over. No hassel,no rush to get in last orders, and then no waiting around for hours to get a taxi. Its not that suprising to see why more people are shunning the pub in favour of drinking at home.

Baloney. There's not one publican who wouldn't love to see the smoking bank overturned. There isn't a rural pub or small town pub that hasn't seen at least a 50% reduction in business. The pubs doing the best business tend to have smoking areas that are almost, but not quite, still part of the pub itself. Those pubs where people have had to go out onto the streets are closed or about to close. Eight pubs I know of have closed in our vicinity since the ban was introduced.

I wouldn't consider going into the publican trade. As for night time grub in a pub. Unless it's far cheaper and good quality, I'd still be inclined to go to a restaurant. Even with food, adding the extra overheads would probably cut margins even further. Nah, the pub trade is dead for the next couple of years at least.

The pub trade has been killed by cost.... buy a bottle of Miller in Tesco's - 80 cent.. in a pub, €4.50... you don't need to be a genius to work it out

We live in a country where a huge chunk of the population have been turned into wage slaves by excessive housing/childcare/transport costs.. throw in babysitting for a couple going out, and a night could easily top €150... bring some friends around, two bottles of wine, a slab of beer - €30

    Go figure

Supposed to go to a wedding reception last night. We called a taxi on Friday to get a price in and out of town (24 miles return trip). €50. Stayed in and opened a bottle of wine instead.
