New Irish language radio station launched

RAIDIÓ X, a new Irish language radio station aimed at youth and young adults, began broadcasting from its website yesterday. It will run 24/7 at www.raidiox.com . It's about time that a station like this got up and running. I bet Darren Mac an Phríora will be pleased.

Full story from the Irish Times/Gaelport.

The broadcasts are aimed at the 15/35 age group and the station was described by working group secretary Julian de Spáinn as Spin FM or 2FM 'as Gaeilge'.
Its early programming will consist of pre-recorded material with music, event guides and gossip. This will be expanded so that by the summer a schedule of live programmes should be in place.
The station has been temporarily called Raidió X but a competition is under way to select a new name before March 17th.

Fair play to them!!! That is good activism!!!

Personally I would rather if our political parties came out in favour of setting up a new station. If Fine Gael don't come out and say in the short to medium term that we are in favour of one I will be leaving them.

    You mean an FM station?

Hopefully this one will get up and running soon, although it looks like it will be restricted to Web-only broadcasting.

Now is as good a time as any to ask the political parties if they are in favour of a new station. One of the Irish language mediae should carry out an analysis to see what parties are in favour of one.

Fine Gael don't have a policy on this currently (though I'm hoping we will soon) but the best thing to do in the short-term would be to ask Enda Kenny is he in favour of one.

I'm confident that he would be, and that would save me the hassel of having to work to have a policy saying that we should have one.

Assuming RAIDIÓ X gets off the ground and does reasonably well, would there be a need for a fourth (or fifth) station? You've got RnaG already, Raidió na Life, Raidió Fáilte. Although they don't broadcast across the island on the FM band, IIRC.

    Cool.
Maybe now I'll get some decent contemporary Irish language bands instead of all that traditional music out there.
Ireland is free for another day.
