Festival of Marxism 2017: Glorifying the Gulag

The "Festival of Marxism" kicked off in Dublin yesterday. The facebook page is here: https://m.facebook.com/MarxismFestival/. The event is organised by the Socialist Workers Party, although you won't find them putting their name to it, just as they don't put their name to the TDs they have in the Dail, but it is very easy to see from the prominence of SWP speakers at the event that it has been organised by them.

The event has been relatively well advertised in Dublin city in terms of posters. It strikes me as bizarre that an ideology which was responsible for tens of millions of deaths in the 20th century, and which has enslaved and subjugated people wherever it has been implemented (spare me the 'no true Scotsman' defence that 'real' Marxism has never been applied) can still, in 2017, be advertised in the context of a "festival".

In my view, there is no moral difference between a "Festival of Marxism" and a "Carnival of National Socialism". Both are totalitarian ideologies which justified genocide against entire groups of people (for the Marxists, this was class based extermination, as in the Kulaks, whereas for the Nazis it was largely race based). Both are utterly failed, discredited belief systems. Yet it is unimaginable that we would see posters advertising an event to discuss Nazi ideas. Why have we forgotten the lessons of Russia and China while we remember so clearly the lessons of Germany?

Marx was a 19th century economist and philosopher.

    Where's the connection to Gulags?

    - BTW Anti Semitism and violence against Jews long pre dated Hitler and the Nazis

It really is bizarre that this Red Cult is allowed to preach hatred on Our Streets in this day and age....

Amazing how all the "Marxists" seem to be very well paid by the state.

Marx was German , he died thirty years before the Russian revolution.

But I accept ignorance is deep-seated and terms like Marxism and socialism have troublesome connotations for the simple-minded. In the US, to take an extreme example, Obama and Hillary Clinton are often cited as 'socialists' and 'liberals', so degraded is the use and understanding of these terms...

So maybe a rebranding is in order. If Nazi-ism can have a successful rebranding as alt-right then how do we rebrand Marxism?
