But with the talk of possibly removing the special tax rate re the hospitality sector which was initially funded by an absolutely disgusting 'raid' on private sector pensions, and which apparently has not been passed on to customers or staff and from what I have heard costs about 1/2 a Billion per year (though it seems extremely high), it really beggars the question how do we the ordinary Paddy benefit from mass tourism?
Granted, the talent level goes up a bit and almost all of us have been tourists ourselves, so it's a case of having the serve returned!
However, clogged up streets, noisey eejits and above all, The Sleeveen Employers which plague the hospitality sector are very annoying and the latter is actually stomach turning!
You live in Galway, yet you say tourism does not benefit ordinary people? Take a walk around Galway city any day during the tourism season.

The benefit needs to be spread around the West. Centres such as Sligo and Westport are doing reasonably well. The Great Western Way from Westport to Achill, which started in 2010 is helping to spread tourism in that area. The Wild Atlantic Way which is now being well marketed is also helping to spread the benefits of tourism along the coast.

Why don't you set up your own business and be the ideal employer? Clue - it can be very hard and very worrying work

I'm glad you asked that, Des.

We can't let the Feast of the Assumption go by without mentioning the benefits that the Masses at Knock bring to the Mayo economy.

To take it as an article of faith that tourism/mass tourism is always and ever a good benefitial thing is like daring to question FDI in this country or the CPT regime.

Things need to be analysed, if Venetians and Barcelonians have justifiable issues and they do, why can we not question it?

BTW I understand the multiplier effect in economics.
