Kilkenny City FC Exit - Bad for Kilkenny?

Should the minister have done something? could anything be done? at a time when the fai are trying to build the irish league into a recognisable european force, teams just cant make the step up. should the government do something about this?

what about the kilkenny community? soccer has a big part to play. now with kilkenny city gone, it leaves freebooters as the largest team in the county. perhaps able to make it up to the new "A" championship? tourism will surely be somewhat hit with no more away fans coming down. the ground will also go downhill, meaning no revenue from under 21 internationals. is there really anyway back?

    Take Three then?

I sympathise with the loss but it's understandable. I made the long trek to Buckley Park more times than I care to rememeber as a Galway United supporter. Nice ground inside, usually a good surface but it's the supporters that make the club in this country and that's why Kilkenny find themselves in this position.

Not to mention the effect on those people from a non-Gaelic background who are now denied expression of part of their culture and heritage.

First cricket in Kilkenny was replaced with hurling, now football bites the dust.

This thread is more on the socio-economic-politcal ramifications of the decision.

I would turn up my nose at discussing something as "common" as sport.

wel nothing wil really replace soccer after we got hammered in football by laois yet again!

this is now a political discussion, with added bits that cant be helped anyway!

there was to be a consortium to relieve the finances and that rathigan would step down, however this never came to be. former manager billy walsh wrote an article in the kilkenny advertiser yesterday saying that the end would be soon, so it mustnt have been a sudden decision. but we did no it was coming with the formation of the "A" championship.

however government intervention should happen in order to save soccer within the country. Kilkenny now must resort to supporting either wexford youths or waterford utd! with the latter definately not happening! i shall stick to ucd for now myself anyway!

yes but once the ground goes downhill, as the upkeep wont be quite as extensive, the internationals will no longer be played there

How are they denied expression of part of their culture and heritage??? Anybody can organise a soccer or cricket match almost anywhere as long as they have the numbers.
