Government scraps Irish language requirement for lawyers

This week Justice Minister Brian Lenihan introduced a bill into Dail Eireann to abolish the 1929 requirement that all lawyers must pass an Irish language exam. Instead of the Irish language being mandatory, it will now be optional, with lawyers opting if they wish to do an "advanced course" in Irish which, if they pass, will allow them to be registered as capable to conduct legal cases in Irish.

Do people agree with the scrapping of the mandatory Irish language requirement, or disagree with it?

That's good to hear. The old test was so simple to be meaningless.

They've been increasing the difficulty of it lately as a further limitation device for admission to Blackhall.

    Plank!

It has been done to ensure that highly qualified and experienced lawyers are not prevented from serving in the court system.

The idea that a lawyer had to be as gailge to be an effective lawyer was arcane.

No, it has to pass through the various stages. It has only just been introduced as a Bill. Don't expect it on the Statute book for at least a year.

On the bright side, if you are planning to become a Solicitor you only have to sit it before you enter Blackhall so if you haven't sat FE-1's yet you probably do have a chance of skipping the Irish Exam owing to the time between now and when you'll enter Blackhall.

Thanks for that John, I have done ppc1 and the 1st Irish. I have the second Irish coming up in the new year. I know that people say its easy but I didn't do Irish in school. Its easy enough to learn the Oral off by heart but the written is very tough.
