    The Foundation Saga by Asimov.

Shows that the short term political outlook can overlook a disaster that has been years in the making.

Great book! Orwell clearly was influenced by this.

Moi is glad to have enlightened you, now if you read my comments on a 'great war' and 'industrialization' you will see were you almost got it right...

I think he definitely was but perhaps not to the extent that is popularly imagined. He had already decided to write '1984' before he'd even heard of 'We', and Orwell biographer Bernard Crick was of the opinion that James Burnham's 'The Managerial Revolution' and 'The Machiavellians' had a greater impact. Ultimately, I think the main influence on it was his own experiences: in school, in Burma, in Spain and in England. (Also, regarding owedtojoy's earlier comment, while Stalinist/Nazi/European fascism was definitely in his sights, it was totalitarianism in general that was the target and it should not be confined to just these overt types).

And I also remember reading that he wanted to create a mythic English saga similar to the Norse and Irish ones.
So the sci fi allegory wouldn't quite fit even though I see where it could be seen in that way.
A technologically advanced society would be indistinguishable from magic as Arthur C Clarke said.
