The desire to change accent is common to all counties here, and across all countries. If you listen to US TV it is rare to find even a regional accent unless it is part of comedy or period drama.

I remember being in New York and only real NY accents you hear are from kids playing in Central Park. Real NY accent being the white working class Irish/Italian accent. Think Minnie Driver or Taxi! Or Joe Pesci in Good Fellas!
