The points allocated during the RWC matches are doubled, and thus tend to skew the rankings if there are many upsets, like ones we have seen over the past few days.
Apparently, and it was news to me when I looked up the BBC web site, Ireland has a chance of qualifying for the finals of the Rugby League world cup. We beat Russia 58-18 yesterday, scoring 11 tries. Russia had previously beaten Georgia 24-0. So, Ireland must be miles better at rugby league than Georgia, which is more than can be said of rugby union. The Irish team appears to consist exclusively of players from famous rugby league clubs in the north of England, like Widnes and Wigan. I have no idea if they are first, second or third-team players for these clubs.Originally Posted by bagel
I can't really see the point of Ireland trying to compete at this sport. Ireland is a small country. We need to concentrate our resources, not spread them around every sport going. If there are any top-quality rugby league players in the north of England of Irish extraction (very likely given how much emigration there was from Ireland to those parts), they should be encouraged to switch to rugby union and get to play for Ireland that way. The England rugby union team has been much stronger since they started poaching rugby league players from the northern clubs. We should do the same.
