    Bernard Dunne and dusted?

Greetings everyone. I have a confession of sorts;last night i sat in front of the telly watched the Hunky Dorys fight night at the soon to be knocked down Point depot.

Nothing very odd about that, however not being a particular fan of boxing i've nontheless always been absorbed by the sport especially when the media whips up such a hype. Having been hugely impressed by Limericks Andy Lee, i must now confess I laughed my arse off when Dunne was flattened in the first round! I'm sure he's a lovely guy and all but i just found myself cheering for that solitary spanierd in the point!

Maybe it's something to do with cocky Irish favourites? I prefer the humble type- hence my regard for Kilkenny Hurlers etc.

Our heroes must surely always remain the underdog, no? Or if they are favourites, be at least magnaminous.

magnanimity and boxing don't really go together. The arrogance and triumphalism is part of the show.
We need to radically change every system that has enabled the wholesale destruction of the Irish landscape, rural and urban. There is no time for incremental step by step measures. The systems have failed utterly and the only hope for a real recovery requires the rule book to be torn up completely.

I don't think he's done and dusted, he just made the strategic error to fight kiko martinez at his own style and pace. What Dunne should have done is kept his distance till he was pumped up enough to deal with Martinez' blows. All Martinez needed was one good, well-aimed punch and he got it. Dunne should have danced him ragged round the ring for a few rounds before bringing him to heel with a few well-judged jabs and hooks.

Congrats to Martinez', though the way he just finished the fight in less than 2 minutes was a bit unfair to the audience. They all paid good money to see the two contenders slug it out and the national anthem lasted longer than the bout itself.

Btw, the national anthem of Spain has no words, they're having a competition to write some lyrics, or so my Economist tells me.

I have to admit, after watching Bernard's last two fights, I could see this one coming. he was very lucky to get away with a victory against what was supposed to be a journeyman policeman from Norway, but barely crawled through the final round, after cutting the guys eye open in the fifth. Was only a matter of time before a real fighter caught up with him, and Martinez was no schmo'

He'd have gotten a real beating against the worlds best if anyone had managed a world title bout for him.. but then, could it be worse than 86 seconds ?

Not a big boxing fan, but got sucked into it....whow what a flop...felt sorry for Dunne, he looked shellshocked at the end. And fair play to him he even managed to respond to Marty Morrissey which must have been as painful as a few of the punches.

Must be heartbreaking to lose and to lose so badly in your home patch. At 11pm the crowds were going ga-ga for him, but within seconds of his defeat many of his erstwhile supporters were streaming out of the stadium. In a funny way was a symbolic of the new Ireland, a bit over-hyped, tacky, aren't we great rubbish, lots of people jumping on the bandwagon and as soon as the wheels come off, people don't want to know.

Spaniard must have been a bit confused by the chanting of Ole, Ole, Ole....I assume he knew it wasn't for him.

And I agree with Munion, Kilkenny and humble? You must be joking....and some of their so called fans are the worst I have ever come across!!! I hope Limerick stuff them and best of luck to the Tipp minors in the final..C'mon the Premier!!

He seems like a nice guy but he is over-rated and way off winning a world title(he won't come close), this was bound to happen when he came up against a serious fighter, thought it was interesting that they put e10,000 on their man to knock Dunne out in the first round @ 66-1, that's a nice touch!

Dunne was a showboat of the highest order, I think he started to believe his own hype and came to the conclusion that he was invincible. This humbling experience was a long time comeing, but I think he will be all the better for it.
The square root of the golden ratio times pi is close to 4, this product is 3.996168.
