Alan Shatter throwing Irish citizenship around like confetti?

It seems every few weeks now there is a report on the news about our new Irish citizens.
On the RTE news this evening it was reported of another welcoming ceremony of over 2,000 new Irish to receive
    citizenship.

Is it that under this government they are making a much bigger deal about it or are we issuing a heck of alot more individuals with citizenship.

As I posted in my thread title it is beginning to feel like it's been thrown around like confetti.

There was a quite astounding backlog built up by the previous government. FF had a quiet policy of delaying all applications in 'processing' for 4-8 years. FG changed that to grant citizenship to those who qualify.

Also, they quite like the 950 euro each applicant forks over. 2000 new Irish equals nearly 2 million into the state coffers.

Well I don't think he is directly responsible for the accepting the citizens even if he is the Justice Minster. I agree with Seabhcan that those process take 4-8 years and that is after a person has lived in the country for 5 years and who's has a earning are over 25K annually.

If they've done what is needed to become citizens then so be it. I hope they all have better lives as a result of it.

It's easy to make a joke about it, but it's never discussed. With Vincent exhausting most of his topics to death, maybe tonight or this week he may for once have a discussion on this topic.

Indeed. Late last year, there was a backlog of nearly 20,000. This is in addition to the new applications coming through.
