I'm a bit of a 'Sindo head' myself, but I think the Irish anthem is pretty good, even with the reference to the 'Saxon foe'. In fact, that part makes me like it even more, just for the sake of p***ing off the PC crowd.

Wait, the national anthem was under copyright this whole time?

So, has the whole Irish Republic been a long scam to make money for second rate song writers?

I have come round to the idea of O'Neill's March but it would need lyrics which would be interesting too in coming up with it.
I have no idea. One thing for sure - it would be difficult to get a song that can conjure up the feeling of Nationalistic pride like our current one does, although that's properly because I've being conditioned by society and state to feel that way whenever I hear it.

It's an awful auld dirge IMO , but wouldn't change it for the world.
Anything else would just be weird.

Why would there need to be a copyright extension just because it is the national anthem? To me, having the national anthem in the public domain seems most appropriate.

The written answer linked to in the OP indicates that the state holds the copyright in order to be able to stop performances in an inappropriate context. That does not really seem right to me. Surely like disrespecting the national anthem should be allowed, just like flag burning?

    Just give me your hand,
    Tabhair dom do lámh.
    Just give me your hand
    And I'll walk with you,
Through the streets of our land,
    Through the mountains so grand.
If you give me your hand.
    Just give me your hand,
    And come along with me.
Will you give me your hand,
And the world it can see,
    That we can be free,
    In peace and harmony?
From the north to the south.
From the east to the west.
    Every mountain, every valley,
    Every bush and birds nest!

    Just give me your hand,
    Tabhair dom do lámh.
    Just give me your hand,
For the world it is ours.
All the sea and the land,
    To destroy or command,
If you give me your hand.
    Just give me your hand,
    In a gesture of peace.
Will you give me your hand
    And all troubles will cease,
For the strong and the weak,
For the rich and the poor?
    All peoples and creeds,
    Let's meet their needs.
With a passion, we can fashion,
    A new world of love!

Interesting choice. It's an established song, and nobody could claim it was in anyway controversial.

The national anthem? I can't even remember the last time I heard it. I don't know anybody who knows more than four of the words. This debate is evidence of how shallow, absurd and meaningless the concept of "Irishness" is.

I advocate changing it immediately to You Make my Dreams by Hall & Oates. I remember often hearing that played immediately before the national anthem and all the pissed cretins sang along just as enthusiasticly.

You dont know anyone who knows more than four words? Surely you must know the opening line "Sinne Fianna Fáil,
atá faoigheall ag Éirinn" or the final one "Seo libh canaig amhrán na bhfiann"?
