I had that problem a few years back,
the wife is a veggie, I dont like spicy food, do you have a set of red wine glasses, we dont eat fish.......
solved the problem - did'nt get invited again!

I'd say it depends on how vegetarian aware you are yourself, if I had people coming I didn't know that well, I'd ask if there was any vegetarian as I like it myself and can cook up a few super veggie courses.
My mother still thinks that chicken and fish are vegetarian, or ham, cos it's not a big dirty lump of steak.
I'd have thought it was much worse manners for non-vegetarians to knowingly invite a vegetarian to eat at their house without offering such an option.
"Why don't you come to my house and I'll fill the table with food you can't eat?" isn't really a very tempting invitation.
Should people who are 'picky eaters' avoid dinner parties?
You know the ones
"Is there onion/garlic/mushroom in that? - I don't eat onion/garlic/mushroom"
"Does anyone want my salad/stuffing/asparagus?" as the plate is held aloft with a knife poised to scrape the unwanted food on to someone else's plate.
