BBC Newsnight touched on this today, with many of Britain's leaders and political elite coming from privately educated backgrounds, no problem with that of course as many of these high fliers are democratically elected, however it makes one wonder how toffs like Cameron and Boris et al are attractive to the electorate.

boris johnson has somehow managed to con a sizeable chunk of the people of london into thinking that he is a bit of a geezer and a legend, even though it should be obvious to most people that he is a racist, anti-working class waste of space and a deeply inept mayor.

I don't think he's conned anyone to be honest. More a case of people seeing he's a bit of both and being tired of working class hero Red Ken with the black taxi meter running wherever he went and stopped off. At least some people got a laugh out of goading Boris on his bicycle.

Boris's biographer has a few things to say about him that is hidden from the public. For instance he uses his comicalness to avoid conversation and other close contact. She gives a lot of other reasons why he won't become Prime Minister.

Have to disagree Roisin3, Boris really conned the electorate. He denies it now, but as soon as he won the Mayoral election it was announced he'd be standing for election in a safe Tory seat in 2015, which means he'd be a part-time Mayor for a year before his term ends (though some say he is already a part-time mayor). There are a couple of other things but it's late and I can't remember them. I was furious when I heard, and I am sure many other Londoners were too. Boris did not win by a very big margin.

It's a pity that Ken had lost his touch most of the time during the election campaign and that he had a persistently negative media. He seemed old and tired. I still think he would have made a much better Mayor than BoJo the so-called buffoon.

There's always a question as to how much of a politician's personal life should enter the political arena and discussion. I note from the Wikipedia blurb on Ken that a number of his previously unknown children became known in 2008. Is that all of them? Were they all by 'old' friends? I will leave it at that, and the black taxi meter running at the public's expense.

They were all by "old" friends. They were getting on in years and still being single they wanted children and chose Ken as father. He takes responsibility for them, but is not a day-to-day dad. The mothers did not want that. I think he has 5 or 6 kids by various mothers. How he managed to keep this secret for so long surprised me.

Dont know about the black taxi cab.

Isn't Ken irrelevant on this thread? No way he could be called "posh"
