John Joe Nevin asks the Pubs of Mullingar to close during homecoming.

Olympic Boxer John Joe Nevin has asked the bars of Mullingar to close for his homecoming celebrations. This comes after a number of his Family were refused entry to a number of Pubs in Mullingar. It is also alleged that a number of other pubs closed down while the Nevin Boxing match was being televised. They also left another bar they had been drinking in after a member of staff was allegedly assaulted and Gardai were called.

Its sad to see this and it most be difficult for him hearing these stories. However is this the story of ignorance and discrimination on behalf of the publicans or is it a case of people engaging in outrageous behaviour and playing the racist card, i suspect the latter.

    The pubs will remain open.
Not everybody is a fan of the Olympics or boxing, or knows who John Nevin is.

They're all naturally excited and just want to see the medals.

In fairness silver is a better class of a metal than copper...

Is it a bit hypocritical too of all the folk in Mullingar crowding around the big screen in the town, when most would keep their distance from travellers?

If they have any manners they'll close. It's actually a very appropriate way to recognise and Olympic achievement of this magnitude.

Big screens very rarely pick pockets.

There will be ones with hands and arms in the years to come, I believe.
