“Destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not."

    Disturbing news from Egypt:

According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi‘i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax. Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.”

If the pyramids go then the rest of the historical stuff, temples at Luxor etc will have to go too. There goes your tourist industry. What other reason would one have for visiting the place? I doubt even the more radical elements would wave bye bye to that source of cash but radical islamists are not known for their intelligence.

But, but according to the Blueshirts here

With regard to democracy, whether you like it or not we have a democratically elected Govt, who still enjoy the support of the majority.

So if they want to destroy the pyramids, that's ok, as they were democractically elected. Same logic applies to Hitler's atrocities and so forth...

Tourism isn't really top of the agenda when it comes to Islamic extremists. This is the kind of crazy thinking that led to the destruction of the Buddhas of Bayiman by the Taliban.

I doubt that they would do so but say they did: would the rest of the world, or a portion of it, be justified in trying to stop them doing so?
