    Oscar Wilde

Are we justified in claiming him as an Irish writer? Oh, I know he was born in Dublin and went to Trinity and all the rest of it, but really he was an English writer, wasn't he? Afterall, his characters are all Lords and Ladies, and Duchesses and Dowagers: nothing Irish about that, is there? In fact, it's quintessentially English.

You think Leopold is really in RSF?

Wilde is a quintessentially Anglo-Irish writer. Whether or not you wish to consider such a person truly Irish is in my opinion, very much to do with your politics. I would consider him thus.

Seamas do not insult Republican Sinn Fein by saying that Leopold is a member/supporter.

So do you really belive that someone who rights novels/play's etc about low ranking members of the aristocricy do not qualify as Irish.

Thank you for that Seamas, lets just hope that we can recover and move on from this painful experince. That is one appaling joke Free Speach.

Just wondering Leopold, are you going to question individually the entire cannon of Irish literature, or is this thread a one off.
