    Why use 'Roman' Catholic?

Why do lots of people (including media commentators) insist on using the terribly naive term Roman Catholic to describe the Catholic Church?

The Catholic Church is composed of a couple of dozen 'particular churches' which include the 'Roman' Catholic Church, the 'Chaldean' Catholic Church, the 'Assyrian' Catholic Church etc.

All of these churches are loyal to the Pople and are members of the Catholic Church, though not Roman Catholic. Why do people insist on using the term Roman Catholic to describe all of the followers of the Pope?

Because they are all loyal to the Pope who is the Bishop of the See of Rome. The words Roman Catholic differentiates from the term catholic as a general term referring to universal.

Would it not depend on where the media was? I mean, over here, does it not make sense to?

When John Paul II died, I never heard anyone in the media refer to the other catholic churches as being Roman.

but Chaldean Catholics are loyal to Rome but are not Roman Catholics. Likewise Assyrian Catholics etc. The term is used to define all followers of the Pope but it is not correct.

The term came about because the Pope is also the Bishop of Rome.

Yes, but my point is that lots of the Churches loyal to the Pope are Catholic but not Roman Catholic. The Pope is also their head.

For example, when this document came out about Protestants this week people kept saying that the Pope is makign this ruling for the Roman Catholic Church. No, it's for the Catholic Church, made up of the dozens of churches that are Catholic and loal to Rome.
