    Boyne from battlefield to playground

THE new Battle of the Boyne children's playground could be up and running by the summer, but Meath County Council will have to find part of the funding for it.

Summer hopes for Battle of the Boyne playground - News - Drogheda-Independent.ie

i haven't been to the Boyne site for a few years but i will down next week, have to say fair play to the ROI for the recognition of an historic site (mind you Aughrim was a larger and bloodier battle) regardless of who ‘won’ is something we in n.i have yet to achieve!! I am sure if the playground goes ahead it will be good addition.

There is far too much emphasis placed on the Battle of the Boyne. Why celebrate an invasion by foreign terrorists?

For visitors it's just a bit of local history that occurred in or around the area and it gets tourists in. It is also part of a tour that takes in Newgrange and other monuments along with that weird shrunken head of St Oliver.

I'll try adding a little sense to the OP:

How is the battle of the Boyne seen in the South (Sorry Donegal and Cavan)?

Some obscure battle from our history that our fellow islanders of british extraction seem to think was the be all and end all of everything.

To us it's an opportunity for take your orange pounds.

I'll see you there, I'll be the lad dressed as King billy( minus the gay dwarf...........joke), E5 for a photo. Mention P.ie and you get a euro off.

Ye can't say fairer than that.

    300 odd years later?

Hardly the only reason it has notoriety is because it underpins PUL culture on the island ifr we had of won it just would have entered the history books as a failed coup and stayed there. We wouldn't be out every 12th wearing the green marching up and down the shankill.

We'd be a little more circumspect and cultured, we'd still be getting locked and making a holy show of ourselves on Paddy's day for any of that malarkey.
