catalpa---Both kings commanded their armies in person assisted by a number of men of high rank and status. King William had under his orders English, Scottish, Dutch, Danish, French Huguenots and Protestants from Ireland. King James Army mainly consisted of Catholic Irishmen, and a scattering of Englishmen loyal to the Stuarts.
i stopped reading after this any one making serious comments on the battle of the boyne should mention the small number of french that fought for king James i.e 7000...funny how you could miss out on a third of the troops!!

You getting jealous you bitter dick? Thank god I am not like you Orangemen. Look at the shape of ye did you see what you just said. Arguing about a battle 400 years ago for flip sake get over it. Just face it your all out to wind or if not get drunk and make a fool of yourselves. If Catholics did the same you'd have a fit. Thankfully that bitter sectarian organization is a dying breed. And as a matter of a fact I do own 4 houses. All 4 houses were earned by my dad who was out helping the community from days Like yours. I've heard it all and I've yet to hear the orange order doing anything good. And I'll probably get attacked for this but you know what. I'm the braver one for telling the truth and seeing past bigotry.

Turns outt that William and the ' Glorious Revolution ' was not as benign as some would like to believeand teh real motives for tokenism to Catholics.

Appearently at the time William needed peace in Ireland, and he had an interest in placating European Catholic opinion. Britain had joined the League of Augsburg, an alliance of European powers whose aim was to limit the expansion of France under Louis XIV. The League was definitely an ecumenical affair; it included such Catholic powers as Austria, Spain and the Holy See. Hence William didn't wish to appear to be gratuitously anti-Catholic. Plus, he wanted peace in Ireland to free up military resources for the League's campaigns.

But the power-politics shifted in 1693, when the papacy wanted James II as the king. Thereafter William was less interested in placating papal opinion, and genuinely concerned that the loyalty of his Catholic subjects was suspect. Hence the change of policy.
