Gender bias in Arts Council Grants?

Men got higher average amounts of grant aid from the Arts Council than women, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The figures from 2010 show the value of grants to men outstripping the value of grants to women by an average of €1,100.

    [..]

Despite the fact that women are the biggest consumers of books, grants for literature significantly favoured men.

72 men got an average grant of €12,451, while 51 women qualified for an average grant of €9,414.

makes no sense. Women buy more books but that has nothing to do with receiving a grant. I would imagine that is given to writers and it may be there are more men than women writers.

I'm looking at the best sellers lists in last Saturday's Irish Times. Female writers are more than holding their own. It looks like the "wimmin" don't need grants.

If the wimmin writers are doing better than the men surely we should give these grants on a gender quota basis so as to help more men get published !!

Sounds like the Arts Council has improved substantially.

Years ago, the only women who got grants had to know the right people or be sponsered by someone with serious connections.

It depends what they are producing, not all art costs the same.

What makes you think that's changed?

I'm friends on Facebook with one guy who is an artist. He is sufficiently well off to have had holidays last year in London, Reykjavik and Bratislava not to mention several trips within Ireland.

He's currently posting photos from his trip earlier this month to Portugal.
