Big crowds at Clonmel National Coursing Meeting

Report from today's Irish Examiner says that upto 10,000 people attended Day 1 of National Coursing Meeting at Clonmel.

It is a three day meet and seems to be very popular with local and international visitors and a big contingent from Northern Ireland. It is apparently also bringing a lot of business to the town and surrounds, which no doubt is very much welcomed by the local community. It also points to the resilience of rural Ireland and strength of the coursing tradition.

From the report, it seems that the anti-coursing lobby had only a token protest with few protestors there.

Now there is muzzling of the dogs, is their presence less than necessary given that there are more important economic worries affecting people? It would seem so judging by the small numbers protesting.

TDs seek support across parties for coursing ban Bill - The Irish Times - Tue, Jan 31, 2012

DÁIL TECHNICAL Group TDs Clare Daly and Maureen O’Sullivan have appealed for cross-party support for their Private Members’ Bill banning hare coursing. They intend moving the Bill during the current Dáil term which runs until Easter.
Ms Daly, Socialist Party TD for Dublin North, said TDs opposed to hare coursing should vote for the Bill, irrespective of party allegiance.
“If their participation in democracy is to mean anything, they really should go with their conscience on an issue like this. The overwhelming majority of people oppose this activity.”

There were about ten protesters outside Dept. of Ag. yesterday on account of this bill, doesn't seem like an issue that's capturing the heart of the nation.

How do animal rights people feel about falconry? Barbaric?

A Trotskyist TD who glorifies the atrocities of the Russian Revolution is trying to ban the chasing of hares by muzzled greyhounds.

You could not make it up

Not been at it for years. A great event. It will outlive all the cranks who are trying to ban it.

Popular activity by all accounts. Not exactly my cup of tea.

Good news for the local economy though.

I wonder does Clare Daly know that her hero the late Mr. Trotsky was much given to the hunting of bears and wolves? That was when he had a day off from murdering other socialists, priests, peasants, journalists, trade unionists, anarchists, sailors and so on.

I'd be all in favour of coursing if it was Mattie McGrath or Mansergh being chased around a muddy field by a pack of slavering hounds
