Susan McKay quits as head of National Wimmin's Council

Women's council chief quits over cuts - The Irish Times - Sat, Jan 28, 2012

Susan McKay has quit as Chief Executive of the National Women's Council. in protest at a 35% cut in their budget. She met the minister for justice Alan Shatter to protest and demand the cuts be reversed but he refused to budge. (Well done Shatter) Good and bad news in this piece. Good news: One of the biggest whingers in Irish public life will be gone off the airwaves for a while and less of your taxes will be paying for this ridiculous organisation. Bad news: combined funding from the taxpayer in 2012 will be 400,000.

Has she resigned because of the "principle" of the thing or was it just in a fit of pique?

Then again, maybe she has another cushy number lined up? Does anyone know?

I'd say she resigned because she would have to accept a 35% wages cut, I mean like how could she live on that?

I believe all pressure groups should be self-funded. It's not fair that some groups are funded by the state to push their political agenda while others are not. 400k gives them a huge advantage over those who disagree with them.

A spokesperson for the organisation didn't know how much McKay was paid. We can only assume that it was in keeping with the best traditions of Irish public life.

    hard to disagree with that.

if theres a genuine need for the sectors involved i dont see why theyre not better off being a political lobby group instead.

i mean its not like theres a LACK of women in the country.

if enough of them are agreived thats one hell of a block to contend with.

i cant help thinking alot of these groups are just excuses for middleclass people to make out like bandits. take charites for instance. their not exactly skimping on the cash for their CEOs there for all the talk of dying children.

we could do with a light being shone on all bodies getting taxpayer cash now.

What a snide post. I'll say one thing for Clanrickard - there is no mistaking his prejudices. Women become 'wimmin' and of course we all know that there's no need for any organisation to counter gender inequality in this perfect Republic. Did he allow the possibility that Susan McKay - a fine journalist - might have resigned because the cuts have reached a point where they make the Council's work impossible. I know others in various bodies who have reached the same conclusion. But no, where's the hate in that?
