There was no effort whatsoever made to rectify the actual line issue. And I don't live in some remote rural area either...

Then again, Eircom has been asset stripped since privatisation with the various owners seemingly uninterested in running it as an effective telecoms company.

And they've only survived doing this because Bertie A'hole Ahern and Mary O'Rourke included the telecommunications infrastructure which generations of taxpayers paid for in the sale - because without it Eircom was worthless and the float would have been a spectacular flop.

As I said, the sooner Eircom goes bust the better.
Seems we have had exactly the same experiance. I wonder if it is possible to get someone from Eircom to come onto the sight and explain how two identical houses on the same line can recieve two different services.

You are a lucky man. I work in a related business and speak to people about this all the time. You are the first good word I have heard about the NBS..even from schools in rural areas. Hang on to it if you are getting those speeds. Would you mind telling me what the latency / ping was on those tests and where you are? Just for curiosity sakes.

You could well be getting your line from a different exchange to you neighbour. Your exchange may not be ASDL enabled yet. Eircom are light years behind other countries in getting their exchanges upgraded.

He said the mast would have to be a 20ft pole from the side of the house, we would pay and then of course he offered no guarantees. It would be unsightly and more importantly expensive, Also the wind doth blow here and I would be worried about the noise level. He did not seem overly enthusiastic about the option himself.
It may be the way to go, but i do have to consider the neighbours.

    (Poor coverage)

I Live in an attached house, my neighbor has Eircom broadband over their phone line, I can see that I get a steady 3 bars off it as it travels through the wall into my house. Obviously its password protected and i wouldn't use it anyway, but it is there and they tell me it works very well.

I am currently with 02 but its rubbish here and I want to move so before Christmas I rang Eircom who tested my line and said it was no good, but asked me to ring back after the new year and they would try to resolve the problem.

I rang this morning and explained the situation, was told again my line is no good. So I asked if I could be transfered to the dept who would fix the problem. The man said no their was no such service, I explained that my neighbor has it and we must be on the same line, the houses were obviously built together (They share a wall) He repeated that their line must work but mine doesn't, he couldent help me. I told him that it must only be a matter of the line leading into my house, He rather annoyingly repeated the same words he had just spoken. I said I am here looking at 3 bars from Eircom on my computer from my neighbors house which uses the same telephone lines.---He repeated exactly the same words again! I said that it must only be the 10ft of line to my house, He repeated it AGAIN. I said their must be a dept who dealt with this , he said this happens all the time and that if it shows "Amber" thats it, their is nothing else to be done.
We said goodbye without arranging to meet for a pint.

Can anyone explain to me how Two houses joined at the Hip can have two completely different services from Eircom? The houses are less than ten years old so the lines are not old ones that one might have been upgraded.
Also since Eircom are in charge of the lines and apparently refuse to even look at the problem is there any resolution to this? Wireless is Cr@P here, permanet cant see over the trees and eircom wont engage in even discussing the problem.
It can take 10 minutes here at time to load a 2 minute you tube vid. My neighbor says his works just fine and he can run two laptops off it.
Head over to the eircom folder on boards.ie and talk to the rep there. They are generally helpful and you might get an explanation.

You could be on to something there. I moved appartments within the same block and assumed I coulld keep my number. Turns out they were on different exchanges (and not different equipment - different buildings). Or at least that's what they told me.

I've got wireless, Yellowfish and I am surrounded by trees. They just put the transceiver on a 10 foot pole on the chimney. No wind noise either. 5MB download, 2MB upload and no cap - €40.

The Eircom end of your phone line has to go back to something like this for ADSL to work:

    Zhone | Products | MALC-ADSL-48 | MALC ADSL2+ Line Cards

That particular card can terminate 48 lines but there are many different types on the market for providers to choose from. I've no clue who Eircom use.

There will be a bunch of those cards, maybe 40 or so in a large rack.

Anyone whose line terminates in an upgraded ADSL card like the one above will be more than likely OK. Anyone whose line terminates in the older non-DSL racks has no hope of DSL.

According to This Post, the upgrades to exchanges is not yet complete nationwide. It is possible that your line is still on one of the older ones.

I suspect that is far more likely to be your problem than some weird line quality issue.

Possibly, but the houses are attached, built at the same time and fed by the same line coming down the road, I honestly don't know enough about these things, but i would imagine its the same exchange.
I have to head out now, dog walk before school run, thanks everyone for all the advice. I am going to try the idea of reporting the crackly line before taking it any further.

I tried for a year to get Eircom to tell me why I couldn't have broadband, they, there is no other word for it, lied, when I finally got the truth out of one of them the customer manager whilst reluctantly confirming wanted to know the name of the person who told me!

Eircom said they were only contracted to ensure a telephone line so if they couldn't be arsed to connect b/b to my house - tough!

After telling them where to shove their telephone line I took the best part of another year to pay the outstanding bill.

I went with the competition. Its not perfect but its better and cheaper than Eircom. Who would have guessed I would miss BT and I really miss BT.
