Alternatively, if a modem has not already been posted to you (I'll check but it should be on it's way) I will arrange for one to be delivered early next week. Once this modem has been connected I can then properly confirm your attainable speed and also that things are working fine.
This statement supports my suspicion that the initial 'line test' is not a line test at all, merely determining if the exchange end is configured for ADSL. There is not much that can be tested on an unterminated phone line or a line terminated with an on hook pots phone, apart from some reflection tests.

To do a genuine line test, i.e. frequency response/bandwidth, balance and attenuation, the line needs to be terminated with something that can be remotely put into loop mode (such as a DSL modem).

A good result all round I think.

Last post on this, but it seems that I can actualy get up to 6MB, this is a lot more than I have had to date, will wait for mrs yellowfish to come home before deciding on a bundle. I dont think I will need 6mb but whatever we go for will be a fantastic improvement on the previouse 0-50 kbps we have been used to. Once again I am not a techy, but I am thinking of getting a lead to link the laptop to the tv so as we can purchase films online, I am guessing 2mb should suffice for this.
Anyway, here is the last note from Eircom and then unless anyone has a question I shall let the thread alone.

I have been able to validate your service and all looks fine. You are currently on a 1Mb service but your line can attain ~6Mb so if you wish to upgrade your broadband speed/package please let me know. You would be better off coming through me for now as the way your line is presented to eircom Customer Sales Agents at present may indicate otherwise. This will update over the coming days but to avoid confusion it's better to go through myself.

So, as it stands you have a working DSL connection but I'm not sure if you have a voice bundle. Very often, you are better off financially to take a voice package as this includes bundle discount. If this is of interest just let me know.

Otherwise please feel free to contact me regarding your service anytime.

Take 6 if you can get it.
It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Don't know if Grade B is good or crap but it's what I'm getting and it's apparently faster than 64% of the rest of ye

The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

Looks like you're all sorted Y-Fish, but for anyone in the south east with similar problems, I would recommend telling Eircom where to go, and trying Aptus Broadband. My parents are in a reasonably remote spot, and found this crowd very good. Or if you are elsewhere, perhaps there are comparable local services available.

Eircom's deals represent pretty dubious value for money in my opinion, and their advertising is laughable. Their "Next generation broadband" is very much previous generation. UPC offer up to 100mb now, compared to Eircom's 8mb (though I appreciate that UPC's availability is limited). Plus their current scare-tactics ads, which basically suggest that you should install Eircom broadband to prevent your children from going to music festivals while you're out to dinner/flirting with French tutors/running away to visit American boyfriends - are also laughable.

    Shop around!

49.99 a month??? Are you mad? That sounds very very expensive for what it is!

I find it incredulous that Eircom cannot have nationwide coverage at this stage. It just shows lack if investment!

Take the 6MB especially if your going to be watching movies movies online, you need at least 3mb for HD on netflix but you won't always get the advertised amount depending on the amount of people using broadband in your area! The wire you need is more than likely a HDMI cable, buy it off ebay there next to nothing on there but can be about 20 quid in the shops!

Congrats, yellowfish - good to hear a good news story about Eircom, broadband or indeed Eircom broadband.

Don't rush into choosing a bundle, though - you may not think you'll need 6MB, but these things have a way of creeping up on you. To judge from my own experience, you'll find yourself idly thinking "Hey, now that I've got that I can do this" etc and next thing you know you'll be talking about an upgrade.
