Guess what? Ireland loves The Iron Lady

After the strong showing in this jurisdiction for British royalty-loving flick "The King's Speech", there is further surprise at the even better performance of the Thatcher biopic "The Iron Lady".

    From the Guardian:

One surprise is a relatively strong showing in Ireland. Not only is Cineworld Dublin The Iron Lady's second-best non-London site, but the film garnered 6.29% of its total gross in the Republic, as against 3.75% for The King's Speech on opening weekend. Figures for Northern Ireland – scene of the IRA hunger strikes that saw 10 deaths in 1981 – are 1.70% of takings for The Iron Lady versus only 0.97% for The King's Speech. The distributor partners concede that The Iron Lady did play wider in both areas, which will have been a factor, adding that Meryl Streep is a big positive in Ireland, where her films traditionally outperform the market.

People are interested in a well marketed movie. I really wouldn't read too much into it.

I think this. The current system we have of social losses and private profits is a bit overrated tbh.

You can watch Downfall without liking Hitler - why would audience figures for what is reported as a very good movie be see as some kind of vote or endorsement for Thatcher?

If Sinn Fein can remember the hunger strikes with a guest listed meal in New York (you couldnt make it up! - lets celebrate the hunger strikers with food), then surely watching a movie about Thatcher is acceptable.

I heard Young Fine Gael are paying for their members to go so that might be something to do with it.

Mrs. Thatcher was the best Prime Minister in my lifetime. A no-nonsense lady who stood by her convictions.

I've seen Serendipity, does this make me gay? Actually, don't answer that.

Her convictions like 'personally sanctioning concessions' to 'terrorists'. Catch a grip of your undies and come to this forum to debate, not flex your 'neo-unionist' muscles, whatever that means.
