    Self?

I thought the link was going to be about Robots, Robots will eventualy do all our work and we will find more time to be creative and enjoy ourselves. Of course eventualy we will lose the skills that we needed to improve, build and repair the robots and they will do all this as well, eventualy surpassing us and replacing us as the dominant form on this planet. We will be lucky if they appreciate diversity enough to keep a few of us going in zoos, whilst they take on the process of evolution and conquer the stars.
Its probably not a bad deal if working until i am eighty is the alternative.

It can be, then again it can be a lot more stressful because there's no guaranteed salary at the end of the month.

It's up to you to get out there, find customers and earn your keep.

Also, you've got to deal with all the hassles of managing the business and you've got to accept ultimate responsibility for everything that goes wrong.

On the other hand, you can set your own hours, can take it easy when or work your ass off as the mood suits, you set the rules and you decide how things are to be done.

In short, you've got full autonomy, which has its pros and cons compared to being an employee.

Can you set your own hours? Most that are self employed seem to not stop working

Turning work into play? Not sure I'd want generator plant or construction workers playing. Don't think anyone will want to play rubbish collector either.

If you read the links more carefully, the authors point out that Robots are actually more trouble to employers than humans. A machine has to be looked after by the employer. Humans, on the other hand, spend their non-working (ie unpaid "free") time trying to relax/maintain their health in order to be better workers! And employers complain about having to pay health insurance/pensions!

This is why we are working longer than ever, despite the explosion in automated labour!

I'm self-employed, and I take time off when I feel like it, even if it means that I've got to bust my ass to get work finished when I start again.

I've taken most of this morning off, apart from about 30 minutes on the phone sorting out some problem with a delivery to a customer.

I'm not going to start working until 1pm, and I'll finish today by 4pm or 5pm, depending on how many orders come through today.

I'll probably have to work all hours tomorrow, but at least I get to decide when I work hard, and when I take it easy.

Why not clean up your own rubbish? People got their power from local mills for centuries.

Worth to yourself. It's a precondition of contentment as far as I can see.

Given more than a couple of weeks off in a row, most people, contrary to their expectations, start to show signs of depression, in my experience.
