    It is becoming clear that

    a) people have been scared into working inhuman hours to profit their bosses all across the word. Where they haven't been scared, they've been press ganged.(The story about the Chinese workers for Apple is particularly illustrative of what standard of human beings Steve Jobs and co. are/were)

    b) There is massive underemployment/unemployment across the industrial world. An obvious solution for this is the shortening of shifts to four hours so that work is shared among more people.

So, apart from being moral and humane, cutting the working week is needed in order to stabilise economies

Work liberates people. If you strive and accumulate you are less dependent for survival on the local bully avoiding you for special treatment.

Oh yeah, and work means that someone is there to pull your wisdom tooth when the time comes.

Anyhow. Hats off to Bob Black. At least he got his independently published op-ed debated on p.ie. There's something most of us cant claim to have achieved recently. Clearly he put some work into it.

Actually, on a side note, if work is a way to make you more secure against your enemies, then obviously it becomes a race, built on rationalism which gets increasingly difficult until there is a break and collapse. At which point the process iwll eentually start again after some rearranging and dark ages etc.

In fact, the only dampener to this, or form of counterbalance, is something irrational. Maybe this is part of the reason religion sticks around so long, it makes no rational sense per se, but can be used to limit people from competition on materialism. CAN BE, I said.... It also brainwashes people in other extraordinary ways that requires them to educate and enrich themselves to escape its influence.

Facsinating, all forms of social cohesion....
