A sad day for Irish cinema

Lighthouse Cinema Closed By High Court - movie news - Movies.ie

When Dublin cannot even sustain an arthouse cinema, it has really lost the right to be considered to be a cultural centre.

The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Una Mullally put it well on twitter earlier.

On what planet can Burger King on Grafton St get a 50% rent decrease in the courts but an independent cinema can't?
It really was a fantastic cinema, and can't help feel the greed of the landlord has finally killed off what was planned as a cultural quarter of the city.

The landlord claimed that the story wasn't quite as black as white as it has been portrayed. For instance, he has had two expressions of interest from cinema operators, willing to take it over. I suppose now we'll see if he can back that up.

The planning permission is conditional on it being an art-house cinema, so at least it can't re-open as a crappy suburban multiplex showing Justin Bieber and "Ice Age 4"

If you don't consider cinema to be an essential part of culture, I suggest to board the next time shuttle back to the 19th century.

Just to point out that we will still have the IFI, which is very much an art-house cinema, and the Screen on D'Olier street, whose programme was generally very similar to the Lighthouse, but admittedly with an appeal which is slightly broader.

a recession is a good time to see what we really value

so who gets the money helps show us what we're really concerned about - so bord na gCon, horse racing Ireland, Anglo Irish Bank, retired government nministers, mates of JH Rae will do well and culture gets it in the neck

its part of what we are ...

I don't think it was a good location for a cinema. It was essentially in the middle of nowhere. Still, it's a shame to see anything like this close down.

That's depressing, good cinema. At least Dublin still has the IFI in Temple Bar, Kino in Cork closed so we have nothing.
