Much bigger things going on that this. Yep its disappointing but seriously? If the place was viable it would be still open. rent is an issue, yes, but its an issue for lots of businesses that are striving to stay open. This closure makes little difference to most people, if it did it probably would have gotten the crowds to be viable enough to keep it open.

Do people really have that little to be concerned about?
Chillax man/ lady. It is surely indicative of an ongoing phenomenon across the country.
Social and cultural outlets are important in cities and towns as well being businesses that employ people.
Businesses that are indigenous and serve people's needs at at a local level and then a greater national level are the only way the country is going to develop a sustainable economy.

If enough people were into all that I'm sure it would be there. There clearly isn't so what is the alternative, you expect the rest of us to subsidise the hobby of a few?

Abbey has also been a blackhole in terms of government investment for years with a poor enough return in terms of dramatic output.

dont get me started, I dont want to be taxed to support the arts. Leave me with my money and I'll support what I like.

Very true. Although there have been a few notable exceptions in the last couple of years

Kent Brockman: With our utter annihilation imminent, our federal government has snapped into action. We go live now via satellite to the floor of the United States Congress.

Speaker: Then it is unanimous, we are going to approve the bill to evacuate the town of Springfield in the great state of --
Congressman: Wait a minute, I want to tack on a rider to that bill: $30 million of taxpayer money to support the perverted arts.
Speaker: All in favor of the amended Springfield-slash-pervert bill?
    Everyone: BOOOO!
    Speaker: Bill defeated.

Kent: I've said it before and I'll say it again: Democracy simply doesn't work.

If there isn't a desire for something then it shouldn't be provided. A bit like why commie countries fail, it isn't for politicans to tell us what to watch, consumer demand tells people what we want to see/do etc.
