I would just have to wonder about the logic and thought process of a landlord who increases rent by 100% on what was a viable business in an area that has, I would speculate at least an 80% commercial vacancy level.

There is *nothing* in Smithfield in terms of commercial premises other than Fresh, the grocery store and 1 pub which is exceptionally quiet most of the time.
The lighthouse cinema was a key part of the development plan for that area, it was a marketing tool to attract more people into what is otherwise a dead and failed development.

So what's going to happen now? Who is going to pay this ridiculous rent?

No cinema chain's going to be interested in going in there in the current climate and I can't see any other commercial operation wanting to take the vacant premises at huge rent and with the massive overhead of having to covert a cinema into something else.

The decision simply defies all commercial logic and it strikes me that what we are looking at is completely disconnected companies / individuals who simply do not seem to comprehend or care about market reality.

What use is a huge rent if nobody's willing to pay it? The rent is what someone's willing to pay and it should be set by the market. It's not some notional value that a landlord dreams up in their head nor is it a right to charge any crazy rent that you can think up.

The market sets the rent through the laws of supply and demand and it's quite clear that the landlord in this case is setting a rent so high that there will be no tenants.

Is this not a bit odd?

You people need to cop on.

    Ever heard of youtube ?

Who needs to worry about rent on O'Connell Street.

I am a bit annoyed over the fact that Inside Job is impossible to find in Ireland. I suppose there are two many similarities with what goes on in this country. Besides if taxpayers in Ireland found out that it is normal in other countries to jail the crooks they might go looking for the same here.

And we can't have that. It would end up with the business elite meeting each other in MountJoy or Wheatfield, instead of chumming up in the K-Club or Druid's Glen. No, we cannot have that.

    Your shot is next.

    Come to Smithfield Dublin Ireland.
Home of the much lamented & late lighthouse Cinema

You may be lucky enough to also experience Irelands only advanced architectural setting when real bullets are fired into real crowds of men women & children at the annual horse
festival that takes place in this desolate venue.

Comissioned by Dublin City Council the architects [ inspired by HR Geiger[Aliens 1&2] and Albert Speer] designed a wonderful and much admired backdrop in Smithfield.
This architectural leitmotif of desolation and urban alienation is in line for an award.

Excellent news for the cultural life of Dublin as the Light House cinema re-opens:

The Light House cinema in Dublin, which closed in last April, will reopen this Friday under new management.
The cinema in Smithfield will now be operated by Element Pictures, best known as the production company which made The Guard andGarage. The company co-produced the Palme D’Or winning The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

Finally a bit of good news amongst all the gloom. Hopefully it does well. The building was specially designed as a cinema and is a wonderful space, as the arty types say
Astral Peaks and bluefirelog like this.

Shame they've selected such mainstream films to re-open with, but good news nevertheless.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

They're fairly mainstream, although good to see The Artist on more screens. It's only been on in the IFI and Cineworld in the city, and most of the screenings have been sold out.

Remember though that the Light House is private and needs to be financially viable. I would have more of a complaint about the film selections in the IFI, which is government subsidised and used to be wholly club/arthouse, but in recent years has shown much more mainstream films. Currently they are showing War Horse and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, both of which are widely available
