It's not for me, or you, to question his motives for staying on in the Church. Maybe he feels he can make a difference from within, rather than shouting from the sidelines like most of us do.
A parent who geniunely loves a child also disciplines it and scolds it. A parent who just oohs and awws and always responds the same way with "luv" no matter what the child does doesnt really love the child...They are playing out some sick narcissistic game which is exactly what these oh so loving and accepting (because they have no sense of actual evil) clergy are up to.

Also open your Gospel....Its a little more complicated than just "luv" (Christ refers to people as the childern of satan and flogs the money changers out of the Temple for instance)....Your mate belongs in the RCC as much as a physical force Republican belongs in Fine Gael.

I really have no idea where you're going with this line of 'reasoning'.

The man is an adult who takes the time to listen (and talk to/discuss) to anyone about whatever it is they want to talk about. Maybe it's just talk. You know, sport, politics, the neighbour's noisy dog, loneliness, drink, drugs, sex or rock and roll (my own favourite).

You're the one with the hang-up if you think that what he's doing is narcissistic. He's just not the type. You won't meet a more down-to-earth and warm individual. He like people, they seem to like him and he talks straight.

And really that's all most people seem to want.

Naa. Some people might actually fall for the old "lets secularise something to make it more fair" line.

I read a bit of Benedict's last book on Jesus where he complains that liberals have turned Jesus into some kind of effeminate hippy, tree hugging PC social worker.
