UK Catholic Herald: Great that Hitchens has Cancer

A Christian blogger recently wrote that they were happy that Christopher Hitchens had contracted throat cancer, and now a mainstream UK Catholic newspaper has also published this opinion:

Perhaps throat cancer will move Christopher Hitchens to a change of heart|CatholicHerald.co.uk

I'm an atheist, but I still can't see the historical Jesus being the kind of person to take delight in the pain and death of others.

Your OP is a crock of ******************** as you use your headline to suggest that Catholic Herald is supporting the view of one of its contributors.

Its no more indicative of the views of the Catholic Herald than you are of P.ie.

That doesn't seem to be a reasonable interpretation of the article in the Catholic Herald. They don't express happiness at the news but do seem to think that his cancer might lead him to question his atheism. I doubt that it will but even if it does, what would that prove? That faith is born out of fear? I doubt that christians would be happy to assert that.

The title of this thread must be one of the most misleading on this site, ever.

A thoroughly dishonest thread title - you should be ashamed of yourself oceanclub.

But the contributor in the link given, far from saying he is glad Hitchens has cancer, says "he has my sympathy and prayers.."

The OP is not only a lie, but a stupid lie, since it openly provides the evidence of its own mendacity.

That's a rather gross misrepresentation of the article.

    The opening paragraph:

I have just learnt that the writer Christopher Hitchens, who for several years now has modestly assumed the mantle once worn by Attila the Hun, as “Scourge of God”, is suffering from throat cancer. It would be impertinent for me to feign great sorrow at this news, as I only know Hitchens from hearsay, reputation and his writings. Nonetheless, if my own doctor had broken similar news to me I would have been shocked, so he has my sympathy; prayers as well – a more practical remedy.
    A poster of some consequence...

Is English your second language? The article says nothing of the kind. The headline says something different. Lazy, childish OP.

Are you sure you are reading the same article?

The tacked-on tea-and-sympathy line is transparently an attempt to ward off criticism for the gloating tone of the article. There is no disguising the delight of the author at the news of Hitchen's illness.

Wake me up when the Catholic Herald features an article supporting abortion.
