    Strange and definetly hypocritical
My sister knows I'm an atheist but wanted me to be godfather, the choice was to make some religious stand which would disappoint her, or say the magic words and have a nice day out.

If I had inlaws and it was my kid and they believed the kid would go to hell if not baptised, why put them through that. Say the magic words and everyone's happy.

My favourite is "we're not going to baptise our child, no, that would be hypocritical. We're going to have a "humanist" naming ceremony instead".

"Humanist" ceremony? The only thing conceivably sillier than religious ritual is...non-religious ritual. Seriously, what is it for? What the hell is it for?

    You couldn't make it up.

Thats fair enough TBF, but it's still hypocracy, dress it up anyway you want, it remains what it is.

I went to one of those too to "welcome" the baby. She didn't have much to say though

I think it is just an excuse for a bit of a party.

    Question:

Can't any confirmed member of the RCC administer the Rite (Batisim) or is that just in certain circumstances or is it just with the Last Rites?

As you are not practising, it would be hypocrtical to baptise your child as you would only be paying lip service to the oaths you are required to make.

Your child will have opportunities in later life to have God revealed to him/her.

The only difficulty I see is the hurt you will cause your elderly relatives. Your convictions obviously mean more to you than them.

It's a fine line between hypocracy and just being insincere. If I genuinely liked a religious family member I wouldn't want them to fear my hypothetical baby burning in hell.

Prudent. Ideological purity can makes life awkward.
