Celestine V resigned, was possibly murdered. The resignation conciliar crisis anti-Popes provide a somewhat happier precedent, but while mediaeval skullduggery isn't happening, a resignation would be a very destructive process. In places on the Moslem-Christian frontier like Nigeria, a Papal resignation would embolden machete welding thugs to attack local Christians who themselves will respond. I suspect there are more genune practicing Catholics in Nigeria than the EU as a whole.

Don't resign Benny because the evil Muslims will get uppity?

BTW, most Christians in Nigeria aren't Catholics.

Genuine machete-wielding catholics too, as the Muslims have competition in terms of sectarian thuggery there.

Genuine + catholic.....is that not a contradiction? There's nothing genuine about organised religion. The only thing that's genuine is the stupidity of the masses who believe such gobbledigook.
