Anyone notice on the news the defence Brady is offering (though he probably doesn't think of it in those terms!)? -

His bishop told him to do it!

AKA "I was just following orders"!

What would have happened if Smyth had been accused of armed robbery of a bank?

Would the church have arranged a meeting with the bank staff to swear them to secrecy?

He knew about sexual abuse since since 1975 and said and did nothing about it.

any legal would tell you that in the event of an accusation of criminality, what happens is they become the 'other side', no talking, no calls, letters go to solicitor, no unaccompanied minors at settlement/information gathering meetings. We have an ombudsman for children, childline et al but little imo in legislative/constitutional protections that clarifies the legal standing and rights of our youngest citizens.

    To be precise:

He knew about sexual abuse since at least 1975 and said and did nothing about it.

Those of us that are going grey can remember another group of people using the same defence in years gone, that, and the excuse that they were doing it to protect those involved, Those people are every bit as bad as Willie O Dea, Tell them anything we are their betters

At those meetings the complainants signed undertakings, on oath, to respect the confidentiality of the information gathering process. As instructed, and as a matter of urgency, Fr Brady passed both reports to Bishop McKiernan for his immediate action.'
So, what happened to this information and what did his Bishop DO with this information???

Cardinal Sean Brady has confirmed that he represented the Church at meetings when two teenage victims of Fr Brendan Smyth signed an oath of silence about their complaints.
How old were the two teenagers??? WHO REPRESENDED THESE YOUNG PEOPLE???

Did they have a parent/guardian/solicitor present?? If not, why not??

confidence sure but the information was never passed on to the police subsequently, thats the crux.

this is as he said "if I found myself in a situation where I was aware that my failure to act had allowed or meant that other children were abused, well then, I think I would resign,”

and the bishop of kilmore never reported the acts to police http://archives.tcm.ie/irishexaminer...2/09/ihead.htm

Brendan Smyth was convicted on abuse from 1964-1988. http://bishop-accountability.org/pri...astName-S.html

Here's a quote from that report.

Bishop McKiernan was unavailable for comment yesterday, but he has always denied he was involved in a cover-up, saying that with hindsight he should have contacted the gardaí.
With hindsight???!!! He needed hindsight to tell him that he should have obeyed the law of the land at the time???!!!
