If the court in Upper Bavaria that gave the priest an 18-month suspended sentence and a DM4,000 fine had know about the priest's 'previous history' and the 'personality of the convicted person' it might not have suspended the sentence.

Paedophilia is disgusting. However, one must wonder about the motives and indeed the inclinations of a tiny minority who post ad nauseum about the subject, even posting graphic details about the nature of the abuse.

Frankly, even before this story broke he was guilty of collusion in pedophile enabling in his former role before becoming pope when he issued secret orders to bishops around the world detailing that allegations of pedophile priests were to be kept secret. So I'm still happy to stand over what I wrote.

Fair enough - I wasn't criticising.

In this case it appears as if an underling is willing to take the blame. Either the pope knew of what occurred, and so if guilty of enabling, or he did not know, and is guilty of a gross dereliction of duty. Either directly or indirectly the pope is guilty of pedophile enabling.

The other part of that pattern is normally the failure to inform the authorities of the accusation.

That's the crucial bit of information I've been trying to discover - did they shop the guy to the authorities or was this move part of a cover-up (as seems to have been Church SOP - as you point out)

I've not seen this clarified anywhere at all.

Reading the Irish Times report again today it seems full of gaps in all the important places including this one.

At the risk of sounding facetious, I'm tempted to reply by asking "Is the Pope a Catholic?"

Apologist waffle. There is something gravely ill at the heart of the Catholic (so-called) Church. Your founder must be spinning in his grave. (Yes, I know that denies the mumbo-jumbo story of the resurrection.)

Thankfully, two days ago I received formal notification that my defection from the church has been accepted. For anyone interested in leaving the church go to Count Me Out - Take a stand for church/state separation.

Often one knocks down a wall either to open a path where there was none before, or simply to improve the view.

Not really, there seems to be an obsession with what was left behind.

Look, this will be covered up again. By ensuring that the Vicar General takes the hit for this, our red pointy Prada shoe wearing Pope is off the hook.

This story will not run. I hope someone out there makes sure it does, but I am not convinced. The Vatican has so much power, particulary in protecting the Pope.

Next week there will be an encyclical or statement outlawing something or other to take the heat off. And Easter is approaching, the biggest gig on the RC calendar. Washing of feet features in that somewhere doesn't it. How could anyone take their shoes off for a priest to wash them? ugh.

That feet washing thing just came into my head from the dregs of my religious education.
