Galway has won its bid to host the finish of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2012. It is estimated that the deal will be worth between 60 and 80 million euro for the region.
It will also bring with it lots of publicity.
Well done to them.

Great weekend out over there last year. Fair play to Galway.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
It was good to hear a bit of positive news for a change. Nice one Galway.
Well done to Galway!! Fair play to them as well. It was superbly done in terms of organizational & PR as it enlivened up a lot. I enjoyed it re Volvo weekend last year as the fine weather was a factor too.
It was not a boozy pissup on urine filled streets. If you had actually been there, which is now obvious you were not, you would have seen an extremely well organised event. There was no drinking allowed on the streets during the festival, only in the designated event area, and the Gardai did a wonderful job monitoring the event. There was not one bit of trouble. There were 10,000 people in the Docks into the early hours of the morning to welcome the boats to Galway and were more interested in rousing choruses of "The West's Awake" and other local favorites than the usual expectorating and projectile vomiting and fighting seen in Temple Bar any night of the week. It brought MILLIONS and MILLIONS into the economy, which given the tourist season last year, they otherwise would not have had, the hotels guaranteed not to charge inflated prices for the week, and everyone had a terrific time.
"......... we must sometimes listen to those who, consumed with zeal, have scant judgment or balance. To such ones the modern world is nothing but betrayal and ruin.........We feel bound to disagree with these prophets of doom who are forever forecasting calamity -- as though the world's end were imminent."
And just as easy to spot the non-galway people. I suspect you're on a wind-up, but either way you haven't a bogs-notion what you're talking about. If you were in Galway city for even for one day of the stopover last year, you would've seen that it was completely different to race week and the like. What made it such a great success was the fact that it WASN'T a drink fueled pissathon - it was much more centered around familys, with really good food stands, attractions and things to do. The pubs of course did really well, but so did the restaurants, hotels, shops and just about everything else. And it's not just Galway that benefits, it's the entire region.
But if you want to begrudge the west that, be my guest. But in my book, it's fantastic news.
Yes, well done. I was living in Galway last year and they really did a great job organising the event. Galway has plenty of experience hosting major events down the years with the Races and the Arts festivals etc., and that experience was put to good use when they hosted the Volvo Race last time. They put on such a good show that they've secured hosting the finish of the event this time. Bravo Galway, will make sure to make it up there at some stage for the next Volvo Race.
