"But do 'climategate' revelations justify the sceptics’ claims that this is “the final nail in the coffin” of global warming theory? Not at all. They damage the credibility of three or four scientists. They raise questions about the integrity of one or perhaps two out of several hundred lines of evidence."

True. Many are, but politics is about getting votes and going to any church to pick up easy votes is a no brainer. Hypocritical? definitely, but enough people haven't asked for an atheist to represent them for it to be worth many a politician's while to openly declare their beliefs. Standing infront of a church or sitting in a pew during election time is an excellent vote getter. Better yet is the fact that you will have a loyal congregation which will lobby for you in their social circle or knock on doors trying to get you votes. The apathy of the atheist voter is the strongest reason that there are so few openly declared atheists in politics. This is a simple case of 'don't ask - don't get' and the louder you ask the more you get. Believe me there are many a closet atheist councillor, T.D. or senator. Just ask for them.
