Throw them both a gun and whoever kills the other first gets to live.
Every one sees what you appear to be, few really know what you are, and those few dare not oppose themselves to the opinion of the many, who have the majesty of the state to defend them.

Sounds like you have a bit too much time on your hands.

You, standing on the edge of the quick sand suddenly realize you can only rescue one or the other of then, but not both.
You rescue the animal and tell the human to float and how to get out by hanging on to the animal. That way you rescue the animal and the animal rescues the human.

Since we're hardwired to survive and hardwired survival means protecting our own species, you make a choice to save the animal, thereby excercising that faculty which seperates us from animals; reason.

The hardwiring is a hangover from when we were few and the animals were more likely to eat us than we them. In modern times when we are in danger of turning the whole world into a shopping mall, at the expense of more vulnerable species, does the same morality apply?

I think he was agreeing with you; note he said to save the animal.
